Nine UT Arlington students participated in the 2013 American Collegiate Moot Court Association Western Regional on Dec. 6-7, 2013, in Long Beach, Calif.
The UTA Moot Court team includes Gabriel Alonso, Christian Cano, Mark Cantrell, Angela Coward, Miriam Garza, Davinder Jassal, Bhavik Patel, Andre Raymond and Jacob Surratt.
Assistant Professor Oliver Bateman (History), who is the team’s faculty advisor, said while none of the four two-person teams advanced to the national competition, all teams “finished near the middle of the pack.” Jassal, a junior, won a majority of his individual rounds, Bateman said.
The regional event was hosted by California State University-Long Beach.
Trip expenses were funded, in part, through an endowment established by UTA alumnus and local attorney Andrew Sommerman.
Students also toured Muscle Beach, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and other southern California attractions.
“The fact that UTA’s Pre-Law Center is able to give this experience to so many students is nothing short of remarkable,” Bateman said. “Most law students will never leave their campus to attend a moot court competition, and only a handful of those students will be supported by their home university.”
