Cavanagh Wins Gold Medal in International Contest

Music assistant professor Daniel Cavanagh has been named one of 13 winners of the 2009 International Music Prizes for Excellence in Composition in a competition sponsored by the National Academy of Music of Greece.

More than 80 composers submitted nearly 200 compositions. The composers represented the countries of: Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and the U.S. A list of winners is posted online.

Cavanagh, the assistant director of jazz studies at UT Arlington, will receive a Certificate of Mastery in Music Composition and a Gold Medal of Distinction. The UT Arlington professor is a former Smotherman Award winner and released a jazz record in 2008.
