Led by students, a newly formed Spanish-language newscast is making a splash on local television sets.
UTA News en Español is a weekly TV newscast that airs on Time Warner Cable Channel 99 in Arlington and is posted online at utanews.com. Broadcast lecturer Julian Rodriguez serves as news director for the program, which is staffed by bilingual broadcast students looking for experience producing and writing television news.
“There is no other student Spanish newscast in the DFW area that can be compared to UTA News en Español, making [the program] a true revolutionary approach to higher broadcast education,” Rodriguez said. “Local Hispanic media are enthused about this wonderful opportunity. Telemundo 39 and Diario La Estrella are currently working on a profile about [the program], and Univision 23 has posted some of our students’ work on their website.”
Reyna Cavazos, executive producer of UTA News en Español, is a senior broadcast student supervising the production of each weekly newscast. The team meets every Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building and records the newscast at 5:30 p.m. in the Department of Communication TV studio.
