Preparing for future careers is the focus of Comm Day 3.0, a day-long event that connects students with communication professionals from around North Texas.
Organized by the Department of Communication, the event this Tuesday — with its “Communication Careers in a High Tech World” theme — will feature members of the media, public relations and other communication fields. Officials are hopeful UT Arlington students, regardless of major, will walk away with ideas and tips from experts on how best to prepare for their first job following graduation.
“Our goals are to help students prepare for their careers and to get them excited about their futures as communication professionals,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Erika Pribanic-Smith. “Their degree is valuable, but it takes more than coursework to prepare for the working world. The sooner students start thinking of themselves as professionals and begin those preparations, the more successful they will be.”
KXAS NBC-5 television sports reporter Newy Scruggs will open the event with a keynote address. Panels focusing on real-world experience in communication fields and finding employment in the new media and tech sector will follow. The day wraps up with a student competition and fashion show.
In addition to hearing stories about how best to prepare for and keep a job, students will also get the chance to network with communication professionals. Pribanic-Smith said the Networking Expo is crucial to helping students connect with future careers.
“Networking is key,” she said. “Who they know is almost as important as what they know, and students should be taking advantage of the many available means, both high-tech and low-tech, to connect with professionals already working in the field.”
Pribanic-Smith said the event is open to students of all majors. For more information, log on to http://www.uta.edu/communication/commday/2011/index.php.
