With the advent of a new production season, the Maverick Theatre Company makes its campus debut this fall.
The Department of Theatre Arts recently announced the branding change as a way to differentiate the theatrical productions from the academic coursework and degree plans.
“This is a way for our students to connect their Maverick pride to our productions and performances,” said Dr. Natalie Gaupp, senior lecturer and playwright-in-residence. “Students want to be a part of a successful program. There is something about the Maverick Theatre Company that is more than just a name; it’s an opportunity. It gives students a wagon they can hitch their star to.”
The department offers studio and theatre spaces as “labs” for faculty and students to work on performances, staging, makeup and other technical aspects of productions. The Maverick Theatre Company offers a unified banner for students and faculty who want to direct and produce, Gaupp said, and opens the door for off-campus productions, as well.
“We want to train our students to be wonderful actors, technicians, makeup artists, and know the history of theatre,” Gaupp said. “But it’s great for them to have that college experience and this is the part of their life when they can celebrate being a student. Being part of the Maverick Theatre Company ties into that: you’re part of something special.”
The first production in the 2012-2013 season is “Ah, Wilderness!”, a Eugene O’Neill comedy directed by Dr. Dennis Maher, an associate professor of Theatre Arts, that will run Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 25-28. The play stars sophomore Joshua Cummins as Richard, a young man wrestling with a newfound love while the adults in his life face their own unique challenges. Other cast members include sophomore Emily Burgardt, graduate student Eugene Chandler, senior Bridie Marie Corbett, junior Jonathan Crawford and senior Molly Dobbs.
The production will be held on the Mainstage Theatre in the Fine Arts Building. Performances being at 8 p.m. Oct. 19-20 and 25-27, and at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 28. Tickets are $10 for general admission, and $7 for senior citizens, students, and UT Arlington faculty and staff.
