Upgrade Saves UTA Radio Time and Money

comm_radio_timeBroadcast engineer Joseph Carter, manager of technical operations at UTA Radio, recently completed a custom software for the studio.

Carter wrote a piece of software that displays the current time and weather conditions on an overhead monitor in the studio’s window.

“It runs on a repurposed computer,” he said. “The time is synchronized with GPS, providing precisely accurate time. It pulls weather conditions and temperature data from the internet every 5 minutes from area weather stations.”

Carter says he wrote the software because it saved the department more than $1,000 in what would have been spent on off-the-shelf software and hardware.

“In broadcasting, accurate time is critical to keep programming on schedule,” Carter added.
