In 1956, Dallas Congressman Bruce Alger’s strategic conversion on race represented a seminal moment in the evolution of the Republican Party in the once solidly Democratic South. Subsequent events affected the political calculations of the Dallas congressman, who in 1956 adopted the earliest incarnation of the Republican Southern Strategy.
